About Smt. Uma Guha

Smt. Uma Guha was born in Myanmar (erstwhile Burma) in the year 1932. Her family relocated to Kolkata in the late 1940s. She displayed interest in and empathy for the causes of others early in her life.

She carried out her social activities through Sri Ramakrishna Pathachakra & Sevakendra, which was established in 1958 and she was one of the founder members. She supported child education, child health, nutrition and most importantly infused a sense of dignity among the children and women of the weaker section of our society till her death in 2021.

Smt. Uma Guha was also very passionate about Indian Classical Music and was an avid Sarod player. She was a disciple of Smt. Annapurna Devi and Dr. Ali Akbar Khan for major part of her life and imparted classical music lessons to many young and budding musicians. She has been actively associated with spreading the legacy of Baba Allauddin Khan’s Maihar Gharana all her life.

The vision of Uma Guha Foundation is essentially continuation of her social activities in an expanded form & scope and the Foundation will strive to take the spirit of caring further.
